On March 30, 2006, the Summit County
Planning Commission adopted the Summit County General Land Use
Development Plan also known as the General Plan. The General Plan was
also adopted by the Summit County Council on June 19, 2006. The General
Plan is a long-range planning tool that addresses issues of economic
development, preservation of open space and natural resources,
transportation and utility infrastructure from a countywide perspective.

The General
Plan Implementation Committee was formed in the fall of
2006 and has been meeting every other month. The Committee
includes members from the County of Summit Planning
Commission, representatives from County agencies,
community officials, and others involved in the General
Plan steering committee. The Committee has been discussing
ways of incorporating smart growth development concepts,
low impact design measures and sustainable green building
practices into some of the grant programs administered by
the County of Summit Department of Community and Economic
Development.
In the past year, the General Plan Implementation
Committee has discussed the need to promote green building
practices and low impact design to encourage more
sustainable development in the County. The County of
Summit Department of Community and Economic Development,
Planning Division staff is exploring ways to possibly
encourage more low impact design and green building
initiatives in the County.
