Sheriff's Careers

If you are considering a career in law enforcement, you've come to the right place. The Sheriff's Office of Summit County is one of the best law enforcement organizations in the State of Ohio. We are a dedicated group of women and men, who work as a team serving and protecting the Citizens of Summit County. Few are called to a career in law enforcement. Fewer still can meet the rigorous standards required of a Summit County Deputy Sheriff. If you are ready for a challenging and fulfilling career, take the first step with us.

To become a Summit County Sheriff’s Deputy…

Before being considered for the position of a Summit County Deputy Sheriff, certain basic requirements must be met. A person must be 21 years of age and have a valid Ohio driver's license. The person should have graduated high school (or have an equivalent GED) with no criminal record. Finally, the person must successfully complete a 676-hour Basic Peace Officer Training Academy and pass an Ohio Peace Officer's Training Commission State Examination to be certified as a Peace Officer for the State of Ohio. The Sheriff's Office has no residency requirement.

Once these initial requirements are met, an individual must then successfully pass a civil service examination (consisting of written and physical agility tests) for placement on a Certification Eligible List. The prospective employee must submit to physical, drug screening, psychological and polygraph examinations. Once the candidate has successfully completed the foregoing exams, an offer of employment may be extended. Employment is subject to the successful completion of a one-year probationary period.

Summit County Deputies also must successfully complete a 165-hour Corrections Training Academy and pass an Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission State Examination to be certified as a Correctional Officer for the State of Ohio. All new hires will first be assigned to work in the Summit County Jail and must successfully complete a one-year probationary period.

The current annual starting salary for a Summit County Deputy Sheriff is $35,027.20, increasing to $45,780.80 after one year of employment. A Summit County Deputy Sheriff reaches top pay after five years.  Part time or “Intermittent Deputy” positions are available at an hourly rate which is currently $16.84 per hour.  The same qualifications listed above are required for part-time deputy positions.
